Welcome!
Paw your way through the website to satisfy your hungerrrr

Hello - welcome to The Hungry Cougar website! My name is Pat Doler, Culinary Arts Instructor at Ventura High School and I created this website for all my students - past and present. I am in my nineth year teaching Culinary Arts at Ventura High School and I love my job!

Teaching is more to me than just a job. It's a commitment I take very seriously. My goal and my mission as a teacher is: To empower and inspire your child through patience and respect.

My teaching philosophy is this: I don't simply teach cooking classes, I teach students. I teach your child. Your child deserves my full respect and understanding; and in all interactions I will strive to provide this. In return, I expect full cooperation, good attendance, and respect from my students.

I look forward to an exciting and productive year. You are the most important person in your child's life and your involvement and support means a great deal to us all. If you have any questions or concerns, I welcome your call at anytime.

If you have access to a computer, I strongly suggest that you sign up and utilize Parent and Student Connect on Zangle (Ventura Unified School District's web site). This web site will provide you with access to your child's information regarding their grades, attendance, and assignments. Call or go into the Records' Office on campus to apply for a password for accessing the Zangle web site.

Mission Statement

The mission of Ventura High School's Culinary Arts program is to prepare students in the fundamentals of food planning, selection, preparation, presentation, and the care of foods by providing individualized, hands-on training. The school supports a learning environment that promotes personal and professional success, leadership, innovation, diversity, responsibility, and a sense of community.

To accomplish this mission, I am committed to enhance student competencies by teaching students how to evaluate, analyze, and synthesize information in order to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills in a home and career environment.

It is my belief that the student comes first. I recognize that students are the heart of the school and the purpose for offering educational programs. I am committed to the growth of my students as an individual and as a team player. To this end, I embrace a classroom philosophy of respect, tolerance, individual accountability, and service that is demonstrated and encouraged in every area of my class.

Classroom Policies:

I follow and enforce the classroom policies set down by the administration described in the VHS Agenda. Because my classroom is a food environment additional classroom policies must be enforced as well.

Students will be informed as to what types or styles of clothing are and are not appropriate in the kitchen lab setting. Loose, baggy, soiled or sleeveless clothing are considered not to be safe or sanitary around stove tops and in the kitchen lab. Students may be asked to borrow a clean used tee-shirt (that I provide) for student's use to be worn over their clothing that day and turned in at the end of the period to be washed. Open toe shoes are potentially dangerous in a kitchen lab setting as well.

Long hair is to be constrained during all lab activities. It may be pulled back, up, and/or tied or a kitchen bonnet (that I provide) may be worn. No outside hats are to be worn in class.

Tests, quizzes, or safety demonstrations may be made up after school between 3:10-4:00 by appointment only.

Any "late" work will result in an automatic 50% (unless otherwise specified) grade deduction.

Attendance Policy:

If you are absent (excused or unexcused) on a lab day you must make up the points missed. All make-up work is due one week from the day you were absent in order to receive full credit. For special curcumstances, please come and talk with me (ahead of time if possible) to make arrangements.

To learn more about how you can earn points outside the classroom, refer to the tab above "NEED POINTS?". Note, there are limits as to how many extra credit assignments can be turned in per semester.

If a student knows before hand that they will be taking an extended leave of absence from school, please see me before your leave in order to discuss possible lab activities that could help you earn points while you are away.

Tardy Policy:

Punctuality is important. Class starts when you ENTER the room, not when the bell rings. Tardies are unacceptable. In order to discourage unexcused tardies, students are required to give extra care in keeping our classrooms clean and tidy each occurance. In addition, after four tardies detention will be assigned. If a student fails to serve detention, a Saturday School will be be assigned (this is school policy)

Truancy Policy:

For every three times a student is truant a Saturday School will be issued.
