When you return from an ABSENCE you need to:

• Make up any points that you missed due to your absence (excused or unexcused). You have one-week to make up and turn in any missed work.

• It is your responsibility to go and check the “ assignment notebook” by the front door to see what assignment(s)/points you missed during your absence.

• Any paper(s) that were passed out during your absence are in the shelf by the front door. Take what papers you need, complete the assignment as directed, and turn it in for credit.

Each lab day is worth 50 points. To make up a missed lab you may make up the time by visiting a local restaurant.

To begin, you can visit the California Pizza Kitchen restaurant in the Pacific View Mall, for thirty minutes and observe the restaurant and hospitality business. You are there only to observe – not to eat during your assignment time. Be sure to take the Lab Make-Up form and letter with you to the restaurant. The manager on duty will sign you "in" on your form and seat you at the front counter for you to be able to observe each job the employees perform. Upon completion of your observation the manager will sign you "out".

In addition, on the Lab Make-Up form, you are to write a short description on the form on what each employee’s duties/responsibilities are based on your observation. Afterwards, on the back of the form, you are to give your personal assessment of the overall preparation, presentation, and service of the food and the restaurant. Please do not talk to the employees while they are working. .

If you need to make up more than one lab, you can earn additional points by preparing that week's recipe at home without any assistance or help, working at some of our catering events, or by staying after school and help keep our kitchens clean. The amount of time you stay will depend on how much time was missed. Your grade will be based on the quality of your workmanship.

Lab Make-Up Points or Extra Credit assignments:

Cooking at Home (limit 3/semester)

• To earn 15 make-up or extra credit points, you may prepare the food that was prepared in the lab at school that same week at your home. Upon completion of the preparation, you and one of your parents need to complete the Extra Credit form (click below). In order to receive full credit, the completed Extra Credit form must be turned in prior to the following lab. Late submission will not be accepted.

Cooking Show (limit 3/semester)

• To earn 15 make-up or extra credit points, you can watch a cooking show and write a well written, one-page essay describing what you learned from the cooking host.
  I have an approved list of reliable cooking shows that you may select from for this particular assignment. Usually,the shows are thirty minutes long. A well written essay is free of spelling errors and demonstrates the use of proper grammar and good sentence structure.
